In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Somalia.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Prior to the civil war, Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, was known as the "White pearl of the Indian Ocean". Due to intense fighting, much of the city was destroyed, but currently Mogadishu is experiencing a period of intense reconstruction.
2. The dromedary, or Arabian Camel, was probably first domesticated in Somalia or the Arabian Peninsula about 4,000 years ago. The Horn of Africa has nearly 35% of the world's dromedaries, most of the region's stock is in Somalia.
3. Somalia has a very large population of livestock. About 5% of goats, 20% of sheep and 43% of camels in Africa is found in Somalia. Even the term Somali, meaning Go and Milk, refers to the pastoralism of the Somali people.
4. Two important incenses, used mainly in Christian rituals, come mostly from Somalia: myrrh and frankincense. The two are present in the Christian nativity story and are still used today by both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Somali farmers produce 80-90% of the world supply.
5. In antiquity, Somalia was an important commercial centre. It is among the most probable locations of the fabled ancient Land of Punt. In the late 19th century, through a succession of treaties with these kingdoms, the British and Italian empires gained control of parts of the coast and established the colonies of British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland. In 1960 both colonies gained independence and united to form a single country.
6. Strategically located at the mouth of the Bab el Mandeb gateway to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, the country occupies the tip of a region that, due to its resemblance on the map to a rhinoceros' horn, is commonly referred to as the Horn of Africa.
7. Since 1991 Somalia had fallen into a long, ongoing civil war. Various armed factions began competing for influence in the power vacuum, particularly in the south. During this period, due to the absence of a central government, Somalia was a "failed state", and residents returned to customary and religious law in most regions. In 2012, the first permanent central government in the country since the start of the civil war was formed and a period of reconstruction began.
