May is Lyme disease awareness month! This month I will be sharing some personal stories, and a few things I think everyone should know about the fastest growing vector-borne disease in the world... starting with this!
Here are 5 things to know about Lyme disease.
1. What is Lyme disease? Lyme disease is a multi-system bacterial infection of Borrelia spp. Lyme disease is known as the great imitator and can mimic over 300 different illnesses.
2. How do you get Lyme disease? Most commonly believed to be caused by tick bite, although recent studies suggest other biting insects such as mosquitos, biting flies, fleas, and spider may also be vectors.
3. How are you tested? Standard blood tests, known as the Western blot test are 30% to 50% accurate. The gold standard PCR testing is done through Igenex or DNA Connexions labs.
4. What are the early signs? Less than 50% of Lyme patients recall a rash or flu-like symptoms. Some are asymptomatic for years, while others develop symptoms days, weeks, months, or years after infection.
5. What is treatment like? Many patients fail to improve the standard protocol of 28 days of antibiotics and are given a diagnosis of Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS). Leaving patients to pay out of pocket for medications and specialists known as Lyme literate physician.
As always, the views expressed in this video are my own, and I'm happy to share my resources and research with you. Reach out anytime with questions.
