There are many versions of this Appalachian folk song, but in most of them the theme is a lament over the narrator's true love, from whom he is separated. It has been recorded by several artists, including Jean Ritchie, Woody Guthrie, Burl Ives, Andy Griffiths, Guy Carawan, Peggy Seeger, Mike Seeger, The Highwaymen, The New Lost City Ramblers and countless bluegrass groups.

By pure coincidence, my YouTube friend, Peter Adamson uploaded this song at almost the same time I did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sYouo_Je0s

Lyrics and chords:
E ……………………................ A …....…….. E
Chickens a-crowin' on Sourwood Mountain,
…….....…… B7 ……...... E
Hey, ho, diddle-um day.

So many pretty girls I can't count 'em,
………....... B7 ……....… E
Hey ho, diddle-um day.

Big dog bark and little one bite you,
Big girl court and little one spite you.

My true love's a blue-eyed daisy,
If I don't get her, I'll go crazy.

Ol' man Ol' man I want your daughter.
[What d'ya want her fer?]
To bake my bread and to carry my water.

Get your horse and put her up behind you.
Take her home and whup her til she minds you.

I've got a girl she lives up the holler.
She's so fat she can't hardly waller.

My true love lives over the river,
A few more jumps and I'll be with her.

Ducks in the pond, geese in the ocean,
Devil's in the women if they take a notion.

Lyrics and chords of many of my songs are no longer available, as my website has inexplicably expired, though some of them, and eventually, I hope, all of them will be found here:
