Dear Ginny - Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and Guthrie Thomas
Rarer Records
1975

Like everything with Guthrie Thomas…this one’s a strange story. The first thing to know is that it’s not really a duo album. The first seven songs are Guthrie solo and with Marc Edelsen and some bandmates, recorded in Los Angeles. The second side is from a KMOR concert in Murray, Utah. The story goes that Jay Meehan had invited Elliott to play on the air during Meehan’s radio show. Thomas, who seems really was a friend of Elliott’s, shows up, too and the two play a set on the air, with Ramblin’ Jack singing and playing guitar and Guthrie Thomas accompanying.

Meehan recorded the set, and afterwards Thomas asked for the recording, which he used to put this album out, reportedly to the consternation of Ramblin’ Jack. In any event, the pressing was only 500 copies and Thomas sold them at gigs. Note that the album (and presumably the title track) is dedicated to Virginia Vick, later of the infamous kidnapping incident. Also, Guthrie seems to be spelling Murray wrong. The back has what seems like a note from Ramblin’ Jack but based on the research, I am not sure that’s strictly legit.

In any case, a fascinating album with some good tunes, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
