????????HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY, JIMMY!
Born October 1st, 1924, James Earl Carter Jr. served from 1977-1981 as the 39th President of the United States.
Growing up at "The Boyhood Farm" in Georgia, peanut farming was a mainstay for the Carter family, along with their cotton, corn and sugar cane crops.
Jimmy went on to join the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1946. He left with a rank of lieutenant in the submarine division.
Upon the death of his father, he returned home to revive his family's peanut business. His opposition to racial segregation manifested into him becoming a strong civil rights activist, which in turn resulted in entering politics in order to make a change.
He then served as a Georgia state senator from 1963-1967, as governor of Georgia from 1971-1975, and ultimately, became President of the United States, serving from 1977-1981.
Jimmy is a humanitarian and became a very important figure in public service; especially in areas of peace, human rights, diplomacy, civil rights, equality, education, energy conservation, and healthcare reform.
He received the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his work in international conflict solutions, peace negotiations, human rights, democracy, and economic and social development.
In addition to his work in basic human rights and social justice, Jimmy is also an advocate for affordable housing. His tireless hands-on work with Habitat for Humanity extended well into his 90's.
Jimmy married Eleanor Rosalynn Smith in 1946 and had 4 children together. Rosalynn Carter, also an activist and humanitarian, died Nov. 19th, 2023 in their home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 96.
